New Book Club Kits Available

July 1st, 2009

Two new Book Club Kit titles are available:

The Guernsey Potato Peel and Literary Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

This popular title tells the story of Juliet Ashton, who “finds inspiration for her next book in her correspondence with a native of Guernsey and his eccentric friends, who tell her about their island, the books they love, German occupation, and the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a book club born as an alibi during German occupation.” (Baker & Taylor)

Cost by Roxanna Robinson. “Settling into her parents’ home in Maine in the hopes of helping them with their respective health challenges, art professor Julie Lambert is shattered by the discovery of her son’s heroin addiction, a situation for which mother and son receive help from multiple family members.” (Baker & Taylor)

The kits consist of twelve paperback copies of the book, a reading group guide, and information about the author.

The Book Club Kits cannot be reserved online, so call the Cobb County Library Reserves Department at 770-528-2349 to hold one of them for your group.

Wallander, Poirot, Miss Marple on PBS

June 1st, 2009

If you’re a fan of the great Swedish detective novelist Henning Mankell, I hope you’ve been watching the series on Masterpiece Mystery.  The final episode aired Sunday, May 31 but you can usually watch online for a time.

David Suchet returns as Poirot in late June.

A new Miss Marple takes over in July - Julia McKenzie who was so wonderful in Cranford.  She replaces my beloved Geraldine McEwan, so brilliant in the PBS adaptation of E. F. Benson’s Mapp and Lucia (early 1980’s, available on DVD), and Muriel Sparks’ The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1978).

Finally August and September bring new episodes of Inspector Lewis, formerly of Inspector Morse fame.

Did you miss The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North based on novels by Philip Pullman? They were excellent, and are available on DVD.
